A stoma is an opening between the bowel and the skin on the abdomen so that bowel contents empty into a bag on the abdomen, rather than exiting the body normally. If patients are having a stoma (or even if there is a small possibility that they will need one) an appointment is made to see a stoma specialist nurse. This appointment will include advice, answers to any questions, marking the place on the abdomen where the stoma may be and teaching patients how to look after their stoma.
