Angela Vujnovich - Lead Nurse Stoma Care
I qualified in New Zealand in 1994 and worked as a registered nurse on the colorectal unit at Auckland Hospital until 1998. In 1999 I took on the role as the stoma care nurse for Auckland Hospital & Starship Children’s Hospital.
I moved to London in 2001 and worked in various London hospitals as an agency nurse until I was appointed in August 2002 as the Lead Nurse for Stoma Care at St Mark’s Hospital.
I am a clinical module leader for BSc and MSc stoma modules at the Burdett Institute of Nursing. Currently studying for an MSc in gastrointestinal nursing.

Sarah Varma - Clinical Nurse Specialist
Sarah Varma Bsc (Hons) RGN (Dip) My role involves being clinically responsible for the assessment of and treatment delivered to all patients with a stoma, entrocutaneous fistula and ileo-anal pouch formation, within St Mark’s & Northwick Park Hospital. In addition I am the Harrow community stoma nurse, and my role covers out-patient clinics and domicillary visits for on going care in the Harrow community. I am also an active committee member of the St Mark’s Inside Out support group for all Ostomists.
Zarah Perry-Woodford - Clinical Nurse Specialist Pouch Care
Registered Nurse (Adult), Diploma in Nursing 1999, currently pursuing my MSc in gastrointestinal nursing. Foundations in stoma care, inflammatory bowel disease and stoma care modules at BSc level.
Post registration, I served in the Royal Air Force as a military nurse on a general/colorectal ward. In 2002, I joined St Mark’s Hospital and worked as a Senior Staff Nurse on Frederick Salmon ward and then moved to the stoma care department as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in stoma care where I managed patients with colostomies, ileostomies, urostomies, ileo-anal pouches enterocutaneous fistulae and those with intestinal failure.
Since 2005 I have worked as the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pouch Care providing expert care to patients with ileo-anal pouches both pre and post operation. I also run an out-patient nurse-led clinic. I provide current, research based information and literature to patients and staff by contributing to medical and nursing journals and teaching on various educational courses.
Rebecca Slater - Clinical Nurse Specialist
I joined St Mark’s in 2002 taking the position of Ward Sister on The Sainsbury Wing. Although I had been a Ward Sister prior to joining St Mark’s at the Hillingdon Hospital. I have gained a new depth of nursing skills and expertise within the specialities and rare conditions treated here at St Mark’s. I went onto become the clinical lead on Sainsbury Wing undertaking a BSc (Hon) in Colorectal nursing to broaden my knowledge and interest in patients with IBD and bowel cancer. In 2007 I joined the Stoma Care team.
Working in Stoma Care has allowed me to focus on specific diseases and patients that present here at St Mark’s requiring our specialist services. I have a keen interest in patients with intestinal failure, specifically those that require specialised nursing and medical intervention to treat enterocutaneous fistulae.
Recently my role has taken on a new dimension, in that, I work closely with patients that are to have their surgery undertaken laparoscopically. This new approach to colorectal surgery involves an in-depth holistic approach in its aim to get patients recovering quicker from their surgery and my role is pivotal in the success of this.
To benefit patients that have undergone laparoscopic colorectal surgery and the formation of a stoma, I maintain twice daily stoma care reviews together with teaching. This daily point of contact allows my patients to become confident and competent with their stoma prior to discharge from hospital.
To this present time I am working towards my MSC in Colorectal Nursing. I thoroughly enjoy being a member of the Stoma Care team and I am very proud to be an employee of St Mark’s Hospital.

Lisa Allison RN, BA (Adult Nursing), Diploma in Cancer Nursing
I first became interested in gastrointestinal conditions during my nurse training which I completed at Oxford Brookes in 2001. Early in my career I travelled and spent a few months in New Zealand working as an agency nurse to broaden my experience within the general nursing sector. I have worked for a number of years at the Royal Marsden as a Senior Staff Nurse and have gained extensive knowledge and experience within the field of cancer nursing. At the Royal Marsden I cared for complex cancer patients mainly with gastrointestinal and urological cancers and this has led me to take my current post at St Mark’s.
Here I work as a Pouch and Stoma Nurse Specialist. My role encompasses preparing the patient and their families pre-operatively, supporting and educating them through their hospital admission and continuing their care as an outpatient once they have been discharged from hospital.
Louise Williams RGN, Diploma in Nursing 1996
Currently undertaking Msc modules in gastrointestinal nursing. Bsc modules in Stoma care and Continence care.
Since Qualifying in 1996 I have worked in different hospitals throughout London specialising in gastrointestinal nursing. I have been working at St Mark’s Hospital for the last 7 years, 6 of those years were spent on Frederick Salmon ward as a Senior Sister. In 2009 I joined the Stoma Care department as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. In this role I am clinically responsible for the assessment and treatment of patients with all types of stomas, pouches and fistulae.
My current role at the moment is mainly focused on patients in the Intestinal Failure Unit with complex stomas and enterocutaneous fistulae. Managing these types of patients is a challenge that I enjoy as they require specialist nursing management.
Kathaleen Hannan - Stoma Care Administrator
I joined the Stoma Care Team in 2005 as Clinical Administrator having previously worked in various other areas of the NHS. I am responsible for co-ordinating the administrative and clinical aspects of the stoma care department and undertake a wide variety of projects to assist the Stoma Care team on a daily basis.
Working in Stoma Care with specialised nurses has proved very interesting and I have gained a greater insight into the problems of patients with bowel cancers and other diseases.
Patients often find that I am the first point of contact for them or families. I schedule their appointments, see them when they visit our clinics and arrange for delivery of their appliances. Receiving appliances and accessories on time and regularly is of paramount importance to patients to enable them to manage their stomas and to try and live as normal a life as possible.
I particularly enjoy the patient contact part of my role and have got to know many of the patient’s at St Mark’s. They are often going through an emotional and difficult time and I find it very satisfying and I hope my role assists the Stoma team in ensuring they receive the best of care.
I get great pleasure working as part of the Stoma Care Team and particularly within St Mark’s Hospital.
