St Mark’s has featured in a national newspaper about a groundbreaking procedure it offers to detect bowel cancer early. For the feature, Daily Telegraph journalist Elizabeth Grice underwent a flexible sigmoidoscopy screening (known as Flexiscope) at the hospital and wrote: “before experiencing the Flexiscope procedure, I had laughed when they told me that 98 per cent of people would recommend the test to a friend. Now, I feel it would be irresponsible not to.”
The procedure was carried out by consultant nurse Maggie Vance, who was quoted as saying: “I feel passionately about the benefits of this test. It not only reduces the risk of dying from bowel cancer but also from developing a cancer in the first place. I can’t think of a more satisfying job than to contribute to towards the goal of prevention and early detection of this disease. It reduces the risk of bowel cancer by a third and takes less time than going to the dentist.”
