Teaching and Education

St Mark's Academic Institute has a major teaching commitment. It offers a programme of postgraduate instruction in coloproctology which has attracted an ever increasing number of participants. In undergraduate teaching the Institute is working closely with Imperial College. The main event of the year is the international congress, Frontiers in Intestinal and Colorectal Disease. The dates for 2009 are the 2nd - 4th December.

Observerships

Observerships provide clinicians with the opportunity for an informal attachment of varying length to observe the work of the hospital in a limited capacity. Attendance at clinics, endoscopy and physiology sessions is at the discretion of the consultant concerned, but is generally welcomed. The usual duration for an observership is one month. The maximum time is limited by the postgraduate teaching terms as observers may only attend outside those terms. There is a daily charge (currently £30 per day). For further information contact the Academic Institute.

Honorary Clinical Assistants

Postgraduates wishing to play a more active role in the hospital, including the opportunity to undertake research, may apply for the posts of honorary assistants in Surgery or Medicine. GMC registration is essential. Applications are made to the Dean, together with a referral letter, and submitted to the Education Executive for approval. Only four honorary assistants in Surgery can be accommodated at one time and there is currently a waiting list. For further information contact the Academic Institute .

There is an active nursing education programme including various study days, courses through The Burdett Institute for Gastrointestinal Nursing.
