Professor Stephen Chadwick MS FRCS

Stephen Chadwick was appointed to Northwick Park Hospital in 1990 and to the staff of St Marks in 1995. He is a General Gastro Intestinal Surgeon with interests in Colorectal and general Laparoscopic Surgery. After clinical and research appointments under Professor Hugh Dudley he joined Professor Lynne Baker’s department in Durban South Africa where his interest in the management of colonic disease and trauma was instilled. Following his appointment to Northwick Park he began to develop laparoscopic surgery in gall bladder and hernia surgery. Later he began to undertake colorectal and upper gastrointestinal laparoscopic surgery. He now undertakes both a general and colorectal practise for secondary and tertiary referrals. As well as weekly clinics in St Marks and Northwick Park he has recently begun a successful community based anorectal clinic.

He is Clinical Lead for General Surgery and a Council member of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons. He is immediate past Chairman of the Medical Equestrian Association. In 2008, he led a team of British Doctors to Hong Kong to help local medics prepare to provide cover for the Equestrian Olympics. He is a part of the medical team providing acute medical cover for athletes on the Field of Play for the London Olympics and Paralympics.

His research and publications include host defence mechanisms in colorectal surgery for malignancy, managing anorectal disease in the community, gall bladder disease and laparoscopic hernia repair in sportsmen. He has recently published on microeconomic management by surgeons and was senior author of the 2011 paper that won the ASIT (Association of Surgeons in Training) Gold Medal. He has a major interest in teaching the craft of surgery in an efficient and productive operating theatre.
